Tahiti, mon amour
Every time I write in Tahiti, I found myself with the cliche – Tahiti, Mon Amour. Tahiti, but it is my love. A place that I have returned many times that I can count. A place that I will return again and again.
We got to the airport in Tahiti Faaa arrived at two in the morning. The air is hot and heavy with the scent of flowers and tropical fruits. Vahines in sarongs have put garlands around his neck. The bus took us from the airport to the city's largest Papeete. There was a full moon.
To our right was the dark mass of Tahiti. To our left, near the sea – a silver tray the moon. In the middle of the sea, the black mass peak is the island of Moorea. Was moored along the harbor wall and the island has been hunting. Forward were flashing lights in Papeete. The Australian lady behind me pulling on my shoulder and said, "Excuse me if Parramatta Road, Homebush would be about?"
Fortunately, the majority of passengersTahiti has a little 'more romance in their soul. I'm the one who wrote to Maurice Baring: "Tahiti has it all, real things, things you've dreamed all my life, things that made Stevenson had left Europe for good. All the tales of storytellers, and all the poets from Homer downward, have always believed that the existence of some "lucky" islands that were so full of magic and charm that the man was on his duty, and all the tasks and … kept him a willingprisoner. "
Tahiti is in fact the island Lucky. It's so damn beautiful it hurts your eyes. True, Tahiti has changed, is changing.
Samantha is no longer the bar on the seafront to spread, molding, tear, swear, sailors, French legionnaires and Misfits. (There was a legionnaire, the cafard caught with a bottle of wine next to me hit my head, because, as he later explained, I reminded him of someone he hates? E 'state).
And Lafayette, the mostinfamous night somewhere in the Pacific, no longer work from late at night after sunset with a non-stop demonstration of breaking a hip Tamura dance – and this is actually the vertical expression of a horizontal desire – or the fight against positions for hours, every hour.
Yes, some of the sweet simplicity of the islands and vahines now missing, but is still Tahiti. The island of Gauguin, van Nordhoff and Hall, Melville and Somerset Maugham, of Pierre Loti and, yes, Marlon Brando. Lucky Oneisland, which is the most romantic place in the world.
You can not get on a boat slowly and work your way to Tahiti in the form of a pattern of islands. Instead of flying directly to Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia. The cheapest way to visit Tahiti is the package. You need a visa.
Note that there is a charge of Tahiti. Tipping is considered offensive by the standards of Tahiti and habits, and you will see an illiterate idiot, if you insist. Not a nod.
BringSome significant to you in Tahiti, where everything is imported over long distances can be costly. E 'sunblock essential – and most of the wax and at least three bathing suit and a pair of sandals reef, so you do not have our feet on the cutting of dead coral. No need to bring formal clothes, and in fact almost no clothes at all. This is not a formal dressing place like that.
The weather is never less than perfect. The landscape is never lessas an anesthetic. There is, in theory, two seasons. From April to November, is said to be cool and dry, and from November to March is warmer and humid. I never noticed this.
In the past I always stayed on the island of Bali Hai Moorea in the opposite direction just because of the folly of the then owners Muk, Jay and Kelly.
On the lawn of this beautiful hotel is frisbee with Art Buchwald and James Michener and games lost. And then sit down with a bucket of banana flavor and listeningAfter Shel Silverstein sings mad, bad songs and then danced through the night Tamura.
I was younger.
Bali Hai Hotel is still both a part-time residence and a hotel.
Kelly is gone, but the place is now used by Rose, the most wonderful person with Muk and Jay around somewhere. If you live in Bali You try to get an over-the water bungalow, it's worth the extra money. The hotel used for an ad – if you come to Tahiti and was notBooks on Bali Hai someone who has a terrible mistake. One of the few ad campaigns I have ever accepted.
Hyatt Regency Hotel Tahara'a is probably the most luxurious hotel, and is a visually beautiful, built on a cliff. A bus takes you to the beach for water sports. I also lived in what was now the Beachcomber Intercontinental Resort Tahiti and offers incredible views of Moore. The hotel is Puunui Tahiti ITI, the small extension at the end ofisland that tourists rarely visit. It offers spectacular views and is located near the golf course.
Pure theory, get the truck that is scheduled, disorganized, unpredictable, but very funny. Most visitors never firm, although it is an incredible experience, because it is the basic form of transportation in Tahiti, and could find where you are going places. These open-sided trucks at the beginning of the market of Papeete. Taxis are expensive and wastefulshould be avoided. Around midnight, the price doubled. Most hotels offer regular shuttle bus. Rental cars are widely available and are of excellent quality.
The French influence in Tahiti is omnipresent.
The restaurants range from serious to good. Their only problem could be a table, especially Sunday afternoon when tout Tahiti invites you to eat. Wine is a silly price and can vary from the sublime rotgut.
Restaurants where I ate what I could recommendL'Auberge du Pacifique, Le Rubis, and Les Trois Brewers. The local French people are serious about food and standards are generally high, and prices that correspond to this. In an attempt to stage a festival tamaara'a Tahiti. But not a gourmet experience. Do not eat, not a hotel. It 'too damn expensive. Take a walk in town when you want breakfast. Will be half the price and twice as good.
In the evening there is a place on the waterfront – food stalls called les caravans.Cheap, good food, very Tahiti. Certainly not expensive compared to food hotel.
What else should I do when I was in Tahiti?
A hire car around (the road is not all the way across the island). Go to the top of the mountains sing. Visit the Gauguin Museum. To see where exactly is the beauty of the place and the people portrayed. Visit the pool of poor Pierre Loti's. Displaying the only reminder of a member of a royal family – is Pomar dynasty – which will include a bottleBenedictines. Sitting at a cafe in Papeete and see beyond the parade. In ten minutes you can see a dozen of the most beautiful women in the world. Noel Coward had done and hated. In this, as in many other things, was wrong.
Go to lagoonarium – oh, the dirty words – Punaauia and see the fish life in the Pacific Ocean. Take the ferry to Moorea – Moorea ferry about 45 minutes. Moorea while riding on the back Rupe Rupe Ranch or a ride under the water in an Aqua-submarineand pretend to be a fish.
One of the great attractions of Tahiti is the amazing beauty of the islands and even more overwhelming beauty of women of Tahiti. Because of the tragedy, following the Mutiny on the Bounty, because of folklore, because of the incredibly sexy dance Tamura set the world a myth that they are morally free and accessible. Nothing, nothing could be further from the truth. Act with respect and decorum and everything will be fine. Push your luck and youin difficult times. Tahiti girls are beautiful, proud, intelligent and sophisticated, and not to fall for the holidays to visitors. For some, sure.
This still leaves the dance.
In 1820, Article 23 of the Statute of the Leeward Islands before. It 'clear that "all lascivious songs, games or entertainment is strictly prohibited. Wet, thanks to all the gods, then completely ignored. Real life in Tahiti from Papeete, revolves around Tamura, a dancebeyond. The Tahitian loves music, loves dancing, loves to party. Papeete reflect this. Especially on a Friday evening, when the city is wild. There is a tradition in Tahiti is necessary to wear a flower behind her ear. Use one and go out of town.
